We went to Yellowknife so that Chris could show me where his misspent youth went and relive his halcyon days of “raping the North” – his term of going North and reaping the higher wages paid there.
By all of Chris’ accounts, Yellowknife was the last frontier of the Wild West – full of miners, Dene first nation people, and bar fights. We returned 20 years later to the Mild West – to a city in the middle of rebirth. Subdivisions houses and condos, a variety of ethnicities of people, empty honky tonks, and a thriving farmers’ market?! Seriously! The farmers’ market was THE thing to do on a Tuesday night! There was Spanish, Filipino, Dene, Greek, and Thai food, and so much more at the market. The supermarket showed that there is a wide variety of people living in the area too. What are people doing here if they’re not working in the mines?
