Westword magazine in Denver contains all things entertainment related and the play/musical called “UrineTown” immediately caught my eye. The official website http://www.urinetowndenver.org describes the play as
“URINETOWN: THE COMEDY MUSICAL is a satire. Starting with an absurd, exaggerated premise – that all the toilets in a city are controlled by one greedy corporation – the show makes us laugh while it explores real social issues of corporate control, corruption, environmental conservation and the growing divide between rich and poor. But it also parodies those “do-gooders” who try to make societal change happen without thinking things through. The New York Post says it best when it calls URINETOWN, “sheer fun! A wild and happy mix of biting satire and loving parody. It’s a wonderful show!”
The play was great and I especially liked how the author broke the fourth wall several times for great comedic effect. Our only problem with the play was that the music and songs were great and too complex to really come away with something to sing after the show. We also missed some dialog because the play was performed in a waste water treatment plant garage and didn’t quite have the acoustics required for a play despite their best efforts.
