As we were getting close to the airport, I looked down at the ground and was surprised by the eerie red sand of the land. It looked like we were about to land on Mars instead of Ayers Rock Airport. There are two gates at this airport, in and out. When you walk through the arrival gate the sign above says, “Welcome to Ayers Rock Resort”. That’s because there is nothing out here besides the resort and the airport. No gas station, no convenience store, no cabs, nothing. You either come here to stay at the resort or you come for a connecting flight. Chris and I both thought that there might be some enterprising person selling rides in his or her car out to see the rock from the airport, but no luck. We walked out of the airport and up a hill in the desert to take some photos of the rock. Then we headed back inside to wait for our plane. Every picture of the rock gives you the impression that there is no other big rock in the vicinity, but that’s not true! There is another big rock another 10-15 kilometers away and in full view from the airport. Of course, it’s not the pure beautiful red like Uluru, it’s a regular looking hill.
