Tiki-Kon is another tiki weekender in Portland that always happened the weekend after Ohana. We’re always worn out after Ohana, so we always wanted to go, but never actually got there. The organizers decided that this was their last year, so we had to go so we could say that we went.
It turns out we were right not to go in the past. The event was fabulous, but we were TIRED.
We arrived the day before the event was scheduled and went to the Chinese Gardens, which was very beautiful:
The best room crawl at the event was a headhunter-themed room. They gave us an inoculation, a survival kit, and a Jungle-Cruise styled orientation before we headed into the room. There were a bunch of plants in the entrance, so it felt like you were crawling into the jungle. All the walls were covered with fabrics with monstera leaves and a night sky was projected onto the ceiling. It did not feel like you were in a hotel room at all! Then they boiled everyone alive in a cauldron, gave us a drink, and sent us on our way. It was one of the best room crawls I’ve ever been to.
We saw one seminar about Tiki in Japan and saw this couple in the vending area. Lina refuses to make me a hat like this:
Grey almost talked me out of going to what turned out to be one of my favorite tiki bars, The Alibi, which is the 2nd oldest tiki Bar in the country. This place had a great old-school Vegas vibe and we pretty much had the place to ourselves in the mid-afternoon.
We did a home-bar tour on the last day and saw some of the other houses in the Polynesiacs book that also features our home bar:
And we finished off the weekend at another commercial tiki bar and restaurant in Washington called Wahi Hana. This was a great little bar that was perfectly decorated and lighted, but we made fools of ourselves complimenting the waiter on the cheap lights on the tables that let us read the menus (we’re so old).
