Lina was turned on to this performance after telling everyone at work about URINETOWN. The Santaland Diaries was performed at the “Bug Theatre” http://www.bugtheatre.org , a theatre I had never heard of and is one of many former small movie theatres turned into a live theatre venues in Denver.
The show started 20 minutes early with a female performer who did a little stand-up comedy, sang a Christmas Carol, and assigned several groups in the audience their roles as the entire audience sang the “12 days of Christmas”. I couldn’t stop laughing when I heard “4 lbs of back bacon” from the rear of the room assigned with “4 calling birds”
The play itself was based on a short story by David Sedaris (one of Lina and my favorite authors) who recounts his “adventure” as a Macy’s Christmas Elf at the age of 30. We had both read the story a couple of years ago but had a great time watching it performed. Here’s the official blurb.
The Bug Theatre Company is proud to present “The SantaLand Diaries” by David Sedaris, first heard on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition.
It is Sedaris’ humorous and acerbic account of working as an elf in Macy’s SantaLand in Manhattan. The SantaLand Diaries is for adults who don’t mind their humor a little bit wicked…
Directed by Bug Artistic Director Donna Morrison, and starring Gary Culig, The SantaLand Diaries opens Friday, December 8th at 8pm. This year we are holding a limited engagement, so get your reservations early!!!
