On our way to Kauai we stopped in San Francisco to visit a few tiki bars. (It sounds silly to say that, but Hawaii is not known for its tiki bars.)
We arrived in the early evening and took a Lyft to our Oakland hotel. After checking in we visited three tiki bars. The next morning we walked around our hotel area and explored the Oakland Chinatown. We had some of the best Chinese food at a two table restaurant that serves the delivery drivers to the vegetable market.
After lunch we took another Lyft into San Francisco. Chris and I suddenly remembered that the last time we were in the city was 14 years ago when we were still travelling together in the 5th wheel trailer. Our hotel room didn’t have much water pressure or hot water so we can’t recommend it (Americania – it was basically a spruced up motel for hipsters). However, it was close to most things we wanted to see. We were able to walk to our first stop, Pagan Idol. Then we walked to Zombie Village, Whitechapel, and then headed to Smugglers’ Cove. I was pretty skittish after the walk from Zombie Village to Whitechapel (turns out we were walking through the Tenderloin. I guess things are cleaned up from the way things were in the 70’s and 80’s, but it was a little too real zombie village for me). We took another Lyft to our final stop, Last Rites. That was a fun place. They don’t like to call themselves a tiki bar; instead preferring, Polynesian noir.
The next day we hiked up a hill to say,”Hi” to Tiki Bob. Another Lyft brought us to the deYoung museum to view their Papua New Guinea collection. An hour later we were on our way back to the hotel and then on to the airport to Lihue!
