Day 10 Sept. 23rd Chris came home early and we drove 63 kilometers to Turquoise Bay in Ningaloo Reef Park. It was a wonderful drive. We passed hundreds of red termite hills in the desert. Turquoise Bay was fun! We did the Drift part of the bay. We walked into the sea on one side about 50 yards and let the current pull us over the coral reef parallel to the beach. The ride was about 200-300 meters long. At the end of the 300 meters we had to hurriedly swim out of the water before getting pulled out with an even stronger current. There were more fish here than the area we were at in the Great Barrier Reef and a greater variety. The coral here wasn’t as varied or as bright as the Great Barrier either but still nice and well worth the drive. On our drive home I saw kangaroos and two baby emus. Saw a couple of galahs on the road too. We saw so many termite hills that we never thought of taking pictures because they were so plentiful and thought we would always see them. In hindsight we missed the opportunity to take pictures alongside the giant animal road side attractions that Australia is famous for. There was a life-size baby whale shark in Exmouth. Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef are known for the whale sharks that come every fall to feed on the coral spawn. I also saw a giant prawn on the side of the road we could have taken a picture of. Dang it! Now I only have the giant beaver and gopher statues from Alberta.
