I saw this chair at a Tiki show in Palm Springs and I loved it. But we didn’t need any more projects and it wasn’t an easy fit in the truck for the trip home. So, of course, Lina bought it.
I made these temporary cushions to hold us over until this winter when we go to Hawaii and pick out some final material for all the cushions in the Tiki room. I used some left-over fabric I had left-over when I wanted to redo one of Tequila’s dog beds after Lina wouldn’t let me remake it. Lina loves the fabric, but it was a huge pain to cut and sew. Especially because the piping meant I was sewing through six layers of the fur in some places.
These were my first cushions and there was a conflicting advice about seam allowance on the internet. Some said don’t add seam allowance for a tight fit and others said to use the full 1/2″ seam allowance. I compromised in the end and used a full seam allowance on one of the cuts. Turns out that was a mistake. Lina and I sewed on a full dacron cover to make it a nice looking cushion, but it wouldn’t fit in the cover with the dacron, so we had to cut it all off. Now they they just look flat, and the covers are a little under-sized, so they don’t look as good as I had hoped.
I also made the zipper plaque narrow to hide it, but it is now impossible to get the cushions out without cutting them free, so they will stay like they are until they are finalized.
