New Orleans February 2018 – Tours of Two Plantations

We went to Louisiana last week and it was my job to find something to do. I chose the Whitney Plantation. Situated about an hour outside of New Orleans, the Whitney is unique in that the property focuses on what life would have been like for the slaves on the property.

During the tour, we spoke to another guest who told us that the Evergreen was the most intact and complete plantation. It is also the site of many movies including Django Unchained. I didn’t plan on enough things to do during our stay so we went back to plantation country for another tour.

The Field of Angels

1811 German Coast Uprising -These 60 heads symbolize the men who were killed and decapitated after the largest slave revolt in US history. 60 human heads were placed on pikes up and down the Mississippi River to warn other slaves if they decided to rebel.

These are sugar distilling cauldrons. Sugar cane juice was distilled from the largest pot down into smaller pots before the sugar crystallized. These are the original pots found on the property.

This metal box would have held slaves before they were sold.

Whitney Plantation -back of the big house

This is not a toilet. This is a large earthenware jar set into the ground of the kitchen. If you place food in there it keeps it cool.
