We decided to add grass to the backyard after Cholo arrived which created a problem for Lina. Where to garden? The whole operation moved to the front yard where she planted some stuff. Here’s Lina’s 2009 urban garden.
View from the front including the new sod we put in the front and the new white picket fence that replaced the wire mesh fence previously installed. It’s been at least 4 months since it was installed and we still owe the contractor $700.00 to fix the two gates after I finally gave up on getting the crappy paint job fixed as well. |
Our neighbor has been dreaming of grass in front of her house so we helped her install it over a weekend. |
There are three different types of sunflowers shown above. I can only remember two of the varieties, Mammoth and Teddy Bear. There are also two types of tomatoes there, a couple of japanese eggplants, four types of peppers; Anaheim, jalepeno, ancho, and serrano.

There are two plants each of zucchini, yellow squash, acorn and butternut squash. They are all squished (or squashed) together there and competing for available space and sunlight. The acorn and butternut plants are the most aggressive and have worked vines up to the picket fence.

Here are the Mammoth Sunflowers I planted in the very front of the yard. They are the biggest of all the Mammoths. |
Here’s a vie of the side of the house. There are Swiss Chard plants on the left of the path and nastertiums on the right. |
View of the Swiss chard (not rhubarb) and the lovely liquor store across the street. |
Above the garden there is good view of the dominoes game across the street. |
From the front porch the squash plants on the left and the potatoes, tomato and cucumber plants on the right. |
You go bee! View of the lemon cucumber plant up close. |
