This was the first tiki painting I attempted. The painting is of my favorite tiki at the moment, Kanaloa. He’s known by different names throughout Polynesia; Ta’aroa, Tangaroa, and Tangaloa. On some islands he is the supreme god and creator and on other islands he is one of the children of the main gods. On most islands he is the god of the ocean. He’s also a god of magic and fertility. I didn’t paint him with his fertility symbol. You can look that up yourself.
The painting uses a technique we learned in watercolor class called pouring. You basically pour paint down from one edge of the paper to the other. You end up with unpredictable but beautiful results. I penciled Kanaloa in first, then masked off his area and poured the paint. Came in later and painted his details. I was inspired by the Pearl of Wisdom painting. I’m working on another Kanaloa painting that is more obviously inspired by the Pearl of Wisdom. That’ll be another post.
