Had a pretty shitty 40th birthday last year, so Chris decided to surprise me this year with a birthday/Christmas vacation to the big island of Hawaii. We spent about 4 days there. The island is known for its active volcano, waterfalls, mountains, lava beaches, and cattle ranches. The best feature was the volcano by far. If you go, go straight to Volcano National Park, don’t mess around with the other stuff.
Below is a view from our VRBO condo in Kailua Kona. Great view, convenient to get to, managers were super friendly, farmers’ markets nearby, and lots of restaurants in the vicinity. Most tourists don’t venture out of Kona so the rest of the island has a very local Hawaiian feel to it.

Here’s the only sunset we saw the entire time we were there! The volcano was really active when we were there and throws up a lot of gasses that mess with the air quality and sunsets
