Day Five, Sept. 18 We picked up our transport to Port Douglas. After the hour long bumpy van ride we arrived at our port. We were warned that the water was going to be choppy and to take some nausea medicine. The pills were made up of powdered ginger. The sailboat ride was a little choppy, but the front of the boat was very smooth especially in the hammocks. We arrived in the Low Isles, got into a glass bottom boat and came ashore to a nearly deserted island with a lighthouse and coconut trees. The neighboring island was made up of mangrove trees. The reef went around nearly half of the island! All of the passengers took the snorkel tour of the reef. Our guide Cullem pointed out sea turtles and all the different types of soft and hard coral in the reef. Saw a batfish for the first time too. Chris spent nearly the entire time in the reef taking pictures of sea critters. At 12:15pm it was time to return to the boat for lunch. After lunch we were invited to swim in the sea behind the boat. As the crew was washing dishes, the wastewater was flushed out of the boat and attracted several large reef sharks, bat fish, remorra eels and a silver and blue needle fish. Chris jumped in with the sharks but I was too scared. (They’re much better when you’re in the water with them) Everyone was happy and tired on the boat home. I think we all fell asleep on deck listening to the waves and the Police. We had dinner at the supermarket deli in our village. I had a fish sandwich. It had sliced beets in it! Chris’s chicken sandwich had beets too. The sandwiches were good though. Gotta try that when I get home. My favorite Australian drink is Lemon Lime Bitters now. I get a bottle every chance I get. Try Ginger Lime Bitters it’s even better!
