We went camping to a local alpine lake within a couple hours driving distance from Denver this week. Grand Lake is a smallish lake for boating and just the right size for paddling.
Upon arriving and taking short nap at the campground, we rented a power boat and toured around the lake. We were forbidden from taking the boat to the connected Shadow Lake Reservoir, so I made a note of going there the next day when we paddled.
The first full day in Grand Lake, we went on a short 5 mile round trip hike past Adams Falls and into some of the most beautiful and accessible Colorado scenery I’ve ever seen. Most of the hiking path is wide and flat with very little gain in elevation. The views were breathtaking. The best part was that for most of the hike we had the trail all to ourselves.
Then we went for a paddle. Lina had to tow Chris back because she dropped his paddle after he specifically asked her to hold on to it :).
This is Lina. In my defense, Chris rolled off his board, sending one edge of it up, out of the water and onto my board, dragging his paddle underneath the water and also underneath Chris’s board, where I couldn’t reach it. It all happened so suddenly and violently, that I was too stunned to properly talk and convey what had happened to Chris. We were both stunned to learn that the paddle doesn’t float.
