Darkly, enthralling and utterly heartbreaking, this arresting show is more evocative than any I have seen. Utton masterfully delivers a hauntingly realistic portrayal of a man so hurt by cruelties endured due to his disfigurements that he plans to fall to his death from the top of Notre Dame. This poignant climax is only reached once we have been privy to Quasimodo’s life story. The depth of pain, sorrow and anger are almost overwhelming, each word loaded with a depth of meaning that is unfaltering. ‘A one-man masterpiece’ (ThreeWeeks).
This was our first show at the Fringe and we dropped by on a whim. The venue was a tiny little room in the basement of a Victorian mansion and opened with 3 black curtain walls in the background, a mannequin laid out on a platform with a noose around her neck, and Quasimodo hovering over her and shaking.
This was a one man show and the performance was wonderful. The story was summed up beautifully from Quasimodo’s perspective with some intriguing commentary about disabilities and and beauty and how societies react to both.
A very good start if a little depressing.
