We went to a “How to Make Fake Bamboo from PVC” at Tiki Oasis several years ago and were all gung-ho to make some awesome fake bamboo projects. Then we got busy.
There is a photographer coming over to take pictures of the Tiki area, so I wanted to make the pool cover holder look a little presentable and tried to re-create the process from memory.
- Take off the writing on the PVC with solvent (we guessed and it worked pretty well)
- Burn the joints with a propane joint to make it look like there are nodes. (Actually you are supposed to wrap some bailing wire around the joint before you burn it and then squish the ends together to create a 3d joint, but I was too lazy to do it on this project. Also, I need a torch with a finer point.)
- Apply shellac. (I should have sanded the pvc so it accepted the shellac properly, so its mismatched and blotchy)
- Keep applying until it looks like bamboo.
The final result wasn’t terrible, but I definitely need to re-watch the video before I try it again on a more important project.
