Exmouth was the reason for our trip so Chris could perform a 2 day training class for the Boeing American/Australian military base which is one of only four submarine communication generating sites in the world. I knew from Google pictures that Exmouth was well known for big game fishing and diving/snorkeling. I thought that while Chris was working I could go out to reef myself. That didn’t happen. When I got there I got caught up with washing our clothes, reading my books and hanging out in Exmouth. We stayed at the Potshot Motel Hotel Resort. Our room was in the resort’s motel section. They had some more upscale rooms but we weren’t in those. Our building was covered in corrugated metal. The roof and all the walls both inside and out were covered in it! When you walked into the room the main light source was a fluorescent blue light! It was like something out of a movie to indicate a seedy motel. I thought hotel management was trying to be ironic. The pool area was really posh and nice! There was a bottle shop, a restaurant and a bar. I never saw the restaurant busy until Saturday night and then the place was packed from lunch until late at night. The hotel catered to everyone backpackers, families and any one!
Day 10, Sept. 23rd I was supposed to go on a sea kayak/snorkeling tour of Ningaloo Reef while Chris was working today. But an hour before the start I got a call that the wind was too strong and the tour was cancelled. I was sad but I made the best of it by reading my book by the side of the pool, enjoying the cool breeze and the warm desert sun. For lunch I walked to the shopping center. On the way I traded my Life of Pi book for a different book at the book exchange in the dive center. I ordered some chow fun noodles at the Chinese restaurant and did some grocery shopping while I waited for my order. Chris came home early and we went to Turquoise Bay. When we came back we went to Whalers’ Restaurant for dinner. On the walk to the restaurant we saw cockatoos in the trees playing before they went to sleep. I had the kangaroo loin and Chris had the beef. We loved Exmouth. It’s very laidback, friendly and unpretentious.
