The two worst travel books about the big island of Hawaii are Fodor’s and Lonely Planet. I know this because I bought both of them and tried to follow the vague directions to several places on the island. After our first day of snorkeling at Two Step Beach we went to Captain Cook Monument. There is a white stone monument on a rocky shore showing the place where Captain James T. Kirk Cook met his untimely end. It is nearly an hour long hike at a 25% grade down to the shore, but the view of ocean and the seclusion of the hike is worth it. Coming back up the mountain I didn’t feel the same way of course.
The state of Hawaii is trying to save the reef in this area, so it doesn’t allow most boats and kayaks to come to shore. There are only a limited amount of permits that are allowed to do so. the rest of the visitors have to stay with and tow their craft behind them as they snorkel or hike down the trail like we did.
