Day Four, Sept. 17 We packed up our suitcases this morning. Ate breakfast at an Asian bakery up the street. Tasty little buns; chocolate, pineapple, sausage and durian crepe. I could not eat the crepe, had a couple of bites before throwing the rest in the trash. We walked to Paddy’s markets, an indoor swap meet filled with souvenirs made in China and came back to our room to get ready for flight to Cairns (pronounced Cans).
Day Six, Sept. 19th Today we went on a tour of the rainforest. On our way to the rainforest we stopped at a crocodile farm and saw several crocodile feedings. We had the opportunity to pet a python, baby croc, a dingo, an emu, and several parrots and kangaroos. Our very first stop was actually a short hike in the rainforest in a area called the Boulders. Lots of big rocks in the way of a beautiful waterfall. Way above the waterfall we were invited for a dip in a natural pool. No one took the offer as there were lots of biting flies and we were uncomfortable. Our third stop was the canopy walk at Mamu. The view was amazing but we were reminded that this entire area was badly damaged in a typhoon several years ago. It drove away many of the animals and ruined much of the forest canopy. Had lunch at Roscoe’s Italian Restaurant. This area is known for its Italian immigrants who came here to farm about 100 years ago. The pizza and pasta were bad. The meal was included in our tour and originally did not include dessert, but at the last minute our guide finagled some sweets for us. To give you an idea of the food prices in Australia here was the price for lunch, $26.50 if you want dessert it’s an additional $6 and this is cheap! After lunch we drove for another 40 minutes to Josephine Falls, situated in the middle of banana country. We took a small hike to the top of the falls for pictures, then we walked down to the bottom of the falls to the natural pool and water slide! This was one of the highlights of my trip. We had to swim across the deep pool of water, climb up some slippery rocks and then slide down back into the cool water. After the swim we stopped by the side of the road at an honesty stand selling bananas. Five bananas for $2 or 10 for $3. When we finally got back home we had dinner at the supermarket grill. I had the grilled barramundi. Meh.
