Chris and I finally got ourselves over to the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster. The first room is filled with domestic and exotic species of insects and spiders from around the world. I got to pet a tarantula form Central America. The next room is tidal pool animals and has a petting area. Finally to the butterflies. It’s unreal the number of butterflies fluttering around you. It was like something out of a fairytale. Some of the butterflies from the tropics were as large as my entire hand! Do you remember that scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where the children walk into the atrium filled with candy trees and plants and the chocolate river? That’s kind of how I felt when I walked into the atrium/greenhouse butterfly room (except we weren’t allowed to eat the butterflies or touch them). There were between 60-65 species of butterflies there that day. The Butterfly Pavilion buys its butterfly cocoons from all over the world. They help to support the rainforest by buying chrysalis from butterfly farms in the Amazon.
