We finally got to go to Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday. I’d been looking forward to it all week. It’s 10-12 miles away from the trailer, so pretty convenient. The entire area covers about 20,000 acres of forest/marshland and water. We didn’t get to the lake until about 10:20am. Right after inflating the boat and getting it to the water we realized that we had locked both sets of keys in the truck. By the time AAA came out to help us it was about 11:20am. After that we saw that we had what appeared to be a slow leak in the boat. SO we went back to the trailer to fix it and have lunch. It was a false alarm so we went back to the lake to have another go.
By the time we got back to the lake it was after 1pm hot and a little muggy. We were in the water about 20 minutes before realizing that this shallow lake was very very shallow. It was quite a rude ride as we tried to avoid the pointy Cypress tree stumps that are hidden in the muddy water. There were a few yelps of surprise between me and Chris as glided through the water.
I had heard that you can see some interesting animals at the lake from our landlord Bill Huddleston. He even saw a bobcat there once. The only animals I saw were 1 snake, some flying white birds that kept dipping into the water, and a few turtles.
On the way back home we saw an armadillo and an opossum. Unfortunately both were dead on the side of the road. www.fws.gov/biglake
