It’s been over 15 years since Chris and I had been to Austin. We were invited to a Christmas Tiki party at a friend’s house and decided to make a big weekend out of it.
Tiki Tatsu-ya had recently opened in Austin, so we had an opportunity to visit here too! Reservations open the previous evening and it is notoriously difficult to get on. After checking into our AirBnB, we drove to the restaurant to hopefully be added to the list for the following evening. We were in luck! We were able to get in that night and the next! The bar has a complicated backstory, but the decor and drinks were amazing.
Chris found the Cathedral of Junk in Atlas Obscura. I love this kinda thing so much! This guy’s neighbors must hate him! He has been collecting junk and gluing it all together since 1988. People get married here! It was the perfect day to explore the Cathedral. The rainy day scared most people away and we the place to ourselves for at least 40 minutes.
We went to some kooky museums while here. Museum of the Weird being one of them. A lot of this place is for kids, but it was still fun.
Now we’re getting to the good stuff! Caroline’s Annual Christmas Party! People warned me to take lots of pictures and I did not heed their advice. I was so overwhelmed with the space, atmosphere, and meeting new people that I did not take enough pictures to show the majesty that is her home and tiki bar.
