I happened across an auction for some 1946 pictures in Tahiti by Adolphe Sylvain. We won a couple of the prints and needed a frame for them. I also needed to get back into woodworking mode, so I figured this would be good practice.
The plan was to use some discount teak I purchased years ago, but Lina didn’t like the colour and I didn’t like the grain. Then we went to almost every discount wood supplier in town and couldn’t find anything that we were willing to pay for. I did have some walnut left over from the Roorkhee Chair project in 2013, so we decided to use it.
I sold the tools to properly mill wood a long time ago, so I had to use hand planes and a planer to get the sides even.
Then I had to re-saw the boards in half on the bandsaw and plane them again.
Everything was going great until I accidentally cut the groove for the photos on the outside of two boards instead of the inside. I was ready to start from scratch, but Lina said it was fine. So I used the scrap wood and glued some pieces to fill in the outside groves.
Once the gaps were filled in and I planed all of the excess off, I put dowels in the corners and glued them up.
Then I added a bevel on the backside so that it would be difficult to see the seams in my mistakes.
Then it was time for some finish, which was some garnet shellac I had leftover. Can you see the seams?
Some of Lina’s hair ended up in the shellac, so I tested the theory that you could repair it. It was going fine until I saw another hair and had to fix that as well. I should have left them alone, but the final frames look pretty good.
Now we need to find a place to hang them.
